AAREF HILALY
AAREF HILALY
Partner at Sequoia Capital
I love working with talented, hungry people who have big ideas. It’s why I moved halfway across the world to Silicon Valley, and then started a company (CenterRun). When that was acquired, I tried again (Clearwell) – except better, because this time I had some relevant experience and was more able to cope with the terror and euphoria involved in leading a start-up. Looking back, at both companies I was lucky to have a lead investor (Sequoia) who helped me recover from my rookie mistakes, and who enabled me to grow from an inexperienced founder into a confident CEO. I joined Sequoia with the goal of now helping other founders do the same.

There are 14 Northern California locations with plans to launch several more this year including in Southern California starting with Santa Monica. The Philz client roster includes Facebook, Google, and Twitter to name a few. Those not familiar with Philz may assume it is another mass produced coffee chain. “The beauty about our shop is each one has its own culture, its own community. I’m not a cookie cutter. I will never be a cookie cutter,” said Jaber emphatically. Born in Palestine before 1967 and a native of Northern California’s East Bay, Jaber became passionate about coffee as a child when he stole sips of the dark potion at family gatherings. “Coffee made me active and alert. They didn’t have liquor. They had a cup of coffee or tea. You were lucky to have a cookie with it. They used to tell me, ‘Don’t drink coffee. You’re too young,’” chuckled Jaber. Jaber became an entrepreneur as an eight-year-old when he would sell coffee to passersby from his family’s front yard and candy at a bus stop for a family friend who owned a local supermarket. “I like to make my own living. I know how to make money. I don’t ask anyone for help,” said Jaber.

Manager, Sales Enablement + Interim Marketing Lead - Intelligent Vision Systems Group at Jabra (GN Audio)
Zarina is currently the Sales Enablement Manager and Interim Marketing Lead at Altia Systems (recently acquired by GN Audio/Jabra in March 2019). Through creativity and grit, she built out Altia Systems’ inaugural two-tier distribution system, North American channel sales ecosystem and partner portal, contributing to 390% revenue growth from 2016 – 2018. This contribution helped put Zarina began her tech career at LinkedIn as an Engineering Recruiter where she was nominated to join the “Project 100-in-100” task force: a cross-functional engineering and recruiting group tasked with “hiring 100 engineers in 100 days”. In this role, she crafted an unprecedented, streamlined global Employee Referral program for Engineering Recruiting at LinkedIn, contributing to a 180%+ increase in number of referrals. The system built via this project remains in place at LinkedIn to this day. Her experience “closing candidates” fueled her desire to pivot into sales where she was promoted ahead of schedule in the LinkedIn Global Sales Organization (GSO). During her time in the GSO, Zarina was part of LinkedIn's Global Strategic Accounts Development pilot program (a team of 6 out of 200 reps globally). Later, as a Sales Development Team Lead, she led the top-performing, highest quota carrying and overall largest Sales Development team. Eager to jump into full-cycle sales, she worked in sales for two startups that encountered major challenges. She took those learnings with her to Altia Systems, where her sales and marketing knowledge proved instrumental to the firm’s successful exit. In her cross-functional role at Altia Systems, Zarina leads Sales Enablement, and has been credited both internally and externally for “putting Altia Systems’ brand on the map”. Her efforts spearheading the company’s domestic channel sales ecosystem and 2018 corporate rebrand helped generate $6.5M in annual revenue in two years from scratch, such that several multi-billion dollar public companies competed to acquire Altia Systems at a massive multiple in 2018. Zarina received an B.A. in Political Economy and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the founder and ex-Team Captain of Berkeley’s first Women’s Squash team in the university’s 140+ year legacy; the team is now a decade old and competes on the regional and national level. She also was nominated as an Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) Senate candidate – an achievement reserved for < .09% of UC Berkeley undergraduates based on demonstrated leadership and personal brand on campus. Eager to benefit from all that UC Berkeley had to offer, she tutored English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students in English Composition at the Student Learning Center and served as an Undergraduate Researcher at The Walter A. Haas School of Business. Zarina was also involved in Greek Life on campus and is a proud Chi Omega alumna. She now resides in San Francisco.

This session focuses on how you should go about exploring a solution that solves the problem for the user in an iterative and agile manner. One of the most common mistakes that entrepreneurs do is fix their minds on the original idea they had. They cling to their original idea and overlook many other ways of solving that problem. They also become attached to specific use of technologies and lose sight of the user’s context. This session will help you with brainstorming techniques to explore ideas using a wider angle. You will also learn some prototyping techniques and approaches to get feedback from the user and creating an experience vision. You’ll also be introduced to the power of storytelling.

This session highlights that there is uncertainty inherent in any new venture as well as describes a practical way to quantify this risk and gives a practical approach to the entrepreneurial team to prioritize and mitigate the most important risk factors. This chapter explains that the basic elements contributing to uncertainty of a venture are the assumptions being taken in all the stages of the venture. The chapter also gives a framework in classifying these assumptions as ‘critical’, ‘major’ or ‘minor’ categories and gives suggestions on how to track these assumptions.
We’ll also review the entire Transform 3+1 framework towards the end.

Omar’s parents immigrated to the United States from Pakistan in 1983. His first exposure to politics was going with his siblings while in elementary school to protests against the Iraq war. Throughout his upbringing, his family would never shy away from politics and the belief that the most patriotic thing a person could do was fight to make government better. This ethos stayed with him as he went to De Anza Community College where he managed a student budget of $1.2 million. It was also then that he was appointed one of the youngest commissioners in Sunnyvale city history to the Parks and Recreations Commission. He completed his degree in public policy at Cornell University. He intend to use the knowledge he gained from those experiences, and from working for Assembly member Evan Low and Congressmember Mike Honda, for the City of Sunnyvale.

Maimona helped develop and implement inclusive curriculum and helped craft anti-bullying policies. She advocated for state legislation and trained educators on fostering safer schools. Witnessing inequity as a special education teacher and experiencing injustice as a visible muslim compelled her to run for a school board vacancy where she became the only woman to serve on the school board at the time. She won her election in November 2018, and is now the first hijabi Muslim and the youngest woman serving as an elected official in San Jose and all of Santa Clara County. In her role as school board member, Maimona oversees a $100 million dollar budget and advocates for the best interest of 7,000+ students in the district. Maimona is uncontested in the 2020 election. Hence, she will be re-elected to serve another four year term.

To accelerate innovation velocity, Netflix has been building cloud native ML infrastructure that promotes: collaboration, model reuse and data abstraction.
Netflix notebook system and enhancements, ML libraries and orchestration help run hundreds and thousands of experiments every day. ML models should learn and adapt to new data as it arrives, and that is automated via CI/CD platform and DevOps support. Powerful multi-GPU cloud instances and distributed TensorFlow libraries making it possible to run more experiments and train more complex models in a short amount of time. At Netflix, ML is applied to tackle a wide range of challenges such as: personalizing member viewing experience, improving streaming quality, resource management, capacity forecasting, regional fail over and anomaly detection.

Many people are intimated about the stock market and various terms seem mysterious. Mutual funds or ETF ? and what exactly do they mean. What about the index funds? How to get started and how to learn to research and invest. Should I just get a financial advisor?. Many struggle with these concepts and have many questions.
This workshop is designed for anyone who wanted to learn but was afraid to ask. An expert will define these terms in an easy-to-understand terminology and you will walk away feeling that now you can participate all such conversation and feel confident. We will even talk about how to start even if you have $1000 to invest or perhaps $100K. One of the topics is how to use option trading and what is considered 100% risk free investing (yes there is such a thing!).
Naeem Zafar is a Dean’s Teaching Fellow and a member of the faculty at the University of California Berkeley, and Professor of the Practice at Brown University. He teaches courses in Entrepreneurship, Technology Strategy, Innovation and New Venture Finance at Brown and Berkeley.
